Information
name: Purple Mage canon: Everhood canonpoint: Farewell Battle
season: Spring flower: Clematis 'Violet Stardust'
About
A somewhat pompous shadowy being that's existed for quite literally millions of years. A fan of darker magic - such as raising and controlling the dead - they're not afraid to use others around them to get what they want -
Though they've reached a point in their existence where they'd rather not if they can avoid it.
Appearance
height: 6'6"/200cm.
build: Wispy, like a willow tree.
hair: Purple and silky.
eyes: White and glowing.
first impressions: Looks evil. Probably smells like old books and warm oud (so resinous/incense-y). Very easy to confuse them for someone who knows what they're doing, as they tend to hold themself that way. NEVER on the ground unless powers are off - floats everywhere, all the time, 100%.

features: Everything about them is obscured in shadows in some way or another. It's questionable what features they do or don't have, as everything sort of disappears against them. They're vaguely human-shaped, at least. And their hair is impeccable. But that's about all that can be seen just by looking at them.
In Seasons they've been receiving handmade clothes from Duval Freyr ([personal profile] fauxglove) as well as buying more to match, so I actually sat down and made a Pinterest board of stuff that they'd wear. However, they still wear their giant hat and tend to keep their robes on as well, so... not easy to tell.

notes
  • Purple Mage is a genderless being. They may look masculine to some or feminine to others, but they are neither a man nor a woman.
  • Their body and robe do not reflect light, like shadows. If they are in their robe, they'll look rather formless, aside from their hat and hair.
  • Their eyes are little pinpricks of pure light, no pupils or irises or anything; it's best not to assume that your character can tell where they're looking unless they've turned their head.
  • Their voice is softer and more high-pitched than someone might expect, characterized in canon with a soft, one note tone.
Powers
necromancy
Purple Mage is able to yank souls out of the ether and slap them back into their old bodies - their old, rotting bodies - at any time and any place that they wish. The dead are then bound by a "contract" that Purple sets and is able to break at any time, but the dead are not. Each contract usually only applies to one entity, but they've summoned two by accident before.

Seen here. CW: zombies, exposed brains, skeletons, also they're all idiots.
Someone once referred to all this as "when the G falls off the graveyard sign" and I've been thinking about it ever since.
temporomancy
Has minor control over time, though only seems to be able to rewind, and only for a few seconds.

Seen here; when the player receives damage, both the song and their health are rewound.
telekinesis
Able to float themself around, as well as manipulate objects and (presumably) other creatures.
teleportation
Minor, limited to the area around them (so, say, a building). Because doors are for losers.

Visible in video linked under necromancy.
magic disruption
The ability to disrupt the magic of others.

Seen here via Gold Pig; assumedly, because Purple offered to do the same thing, it works similarly to Gold Pig's magic.
music-based projectiles
Please watch one of the videos linked in the left sidebar, I have no idea how to explain this thoroughly. Generally reserved for dear friends or enemies. Good luck figuring out which is which.

Without the Higher Beings of Everhood, they're unable to isolate themself and their opponent, as well as form lanes. They're only able to launch projectiles.

Headcanons
Everhood is vague about a lot of details. These details do not affect who Purple Mage is as a person; they act in the game as I (hopefully) portray them in writing. However, many things about them are purposefully unanswered, thus I have to fill in some gaps with the little details the game does give its players, so here we go.

CW: discussions of death, both self-inflicted and not, death by immolation (yeah), as well as murder and other related things.

appearance
  • Is Purple a reality bending, vantablack hole punched into reality, or are they just very darkly colored? Does the lineart suggest purple coloration, or is that just so we (the players) can see them? No one knows! Fanon goes with the idea that they're vantablack, and they're one of two characters that's colored solid black against a white background, the other being a fellow Mage, so I run with that as well.
  • Their height may not be accurate. It was calculated using the in game battle sprites; the protagonist, Red, is said by the creators to be a meter tall, and Purple's battle sprite is twice Red's height. Their sprites are treated as height accurate during battles with multiple characters, so I assume that must be the case as well.
  • Does Purple have a mouth? Again, no one knows because the creators are allergic to answering questions. However, they seem to be the only character that lacks a mouth in any canon art at all - even Green Mage has one. Purple lacking a mouth (thus the ability to do anything that uses it) DOES fit in with the different bits and pieces of their backstory, however.
backstory
  • Purple Mage knows they were once human, millions of years ago. They are, aside from the Universe itself, the only character to reference 'humanity' outright, after all. However, in RP settings, they still refer to others with words like "mortals" and "humans" as a way to sort of detach themself from everyone else - they know they were once human, but they recognize they're very far from that now. They lost theirs already, after all.
  • Gold Pig very likely first met them at the door to the VIP room, if not at the edge of the incinerator itself. They mention, as they talk about their backstory, that they considered "ending it all" to escape their suffering on the streets - the only way to do that, the incinerator under Gold Pig's possession, was most likely well known, as a lost spirit actually says as much themself, having taken their own life by jumping into the incinerator a long time ago. It's at that point that Purple Mage mentions that Gold Pig had offered them powers, speaking of it like it was an alternative to eternal starvation or suicide, implying that taking Gold Pig's offer freed them from both, alongside giving them importance and making them powerful.
  • To go with the above, their soulbound gem - a ruby belonging to Gold Pig - is most likely in their stomach, rather than in their chest like the fandom likes to think. In order to bind oneself with a gem, you have to give up one of your senses to do so; knowing that, it's likely that the powerless, starving Purple chose to give up their sense of taste - thus also losing their stomach and the sensation of hunger entirely.
And, like, seriously. @ the entire fandom: why would it have replaced their heart?? What sense is the heart even linked to?? You don't smell through your heart last I checked!!
  • What crimes have they committed? What are their sins? Are they a killer? A peace keeper? Did they just fuck around under Gold Pig's commands? We honestly have NO fucking clue. All we know is that they did everything for Gold Pig. Horrible things. What I think is it's very likely that Purple has done a lot of the same shit Gold Pig has done; they were there not as Gold Pig's right hand, but as their servant. Anything Gold Pig didn't feel like doing - or didn't want the backlash for - likely fell to Purple Mage, being that they were completely under Gold Pig's control.
What does this mean for what kind of things they've done? Honestly, your guess is as good as mine, but Gold Pig has shown zero remorse for throwing people into the incinerator to die for little more than being annoying... so I think taking Purple Mage at their word is best: they've done horrible things.
